Romanticism

The story

Delacroix painted this in 1830 right after watching Paris tear itself apart. Liberty's bare chest isn't scandal. It's allegory. Exposed skin meant divinity in classical art. She's not a woman, she's an idea made flesh. And she has followers: a kid with pistols, a man in a top hat, workers with swords. Everyone. She doesn't belong to one class. Delacroix put himself in the painting too, the man with the rifle. A painting borrowed by every uprising since.
