In 1890, Robert Vonnoh painted this French poppy field and called it Poppies. The canvas was nearly 9 feet wide. Nobody bought it. It sat in his studio for almost 30 years. Then WWI tore up the fields of Flanders, and millions of poppies bloomed red over the graves. The flower became a symbol of remembrance. In 1919, Vonnoh renamed his painting In Flanders Field, Where Soldiers Sleep and Poppies Grow. It sold that year.
