Klee went to Tunisia for two weeks in 1914. Two weeks. That's it. He came back and wrote in his diary "color has taken possession of me," then spent the rest of his life painting like a different person. This watercolor is from that trip, a camel and a few tiny figures nearly dissolving into blocks of sand, rose and blue. The light did something to him there that Germany never had. You can see it happening in real time, right here on this painting.
