Landscape with Figures

Impressionism

The story

Monet had money. Renoir had patrons. Guillaumin had a night shift. He cleaned and maintained the streets of Paris while the city slept, then painted through his exhaustion in whatever daylight was left. Present at the first Impressionist Exhibition in 1874, and six of the eight that followed. Van Gogh and Cezanne were paying attention. His colors ended up shaping Fauvism, decades before anyone had a word for it.
