Avenue of Poplars in Autumn

Post-Impressionism

The story

Before being a painter, Van Gogh tried to be an art dealer, a teacher, a preacher. He was mostly lost, and separated from his beloved younger brother Theo, who'd left for Paris to become an art dealer himself. By 27, he was broke, alone, and seen by most as a disappointment. Then he started sketching people and figured out what he was good at. Theo promised him an allowance, on one condition: keep practicing. He did, for six years, before joining Theo in Paris.
