Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer

Art Nouveau

The story

Klimt painted Adele Bloch Bauer over and over. When he finally finished, he wrapped her in gold like she was something between a woman and an icon. Byzantine art, Japanese prints, Egyptian gold, all collapsed into one face. In 2006, this painting sold for $135 million.

But forget the price tag. Look at her hands. Nervous. Almost uncomfortable. All that gold and she still looks like someone caught between wanting to be seen and wanting to disappear.
