Mountains at Saint Rémy

Post-Impressionism

The story

The Romans built a sanctuary here. Later, the Christians put a monastery on the same spot, right at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. Then the place became an asylum for mental patients, and Van Gogh spent several months there, under the mountain's care. The moment he was allowed to walk beyond the walls, he painted it.
