Olive Grove

Post-Impressionism

The story

It was made to show them how wrong they were. At the asylum, Van Gogh exchanged letters and continued to argue with Gauguin and Emile Bernard. They had both painted Christ in the Garden of Olives. From imagination! Worse, they painted sacred scenes from imagination. Van Gogh couldn't stand it. They should not invent religious imagery out of thin air. So he showed them the true spirit of the olive trees.
