Anyone with some deco knowledge will tell you: red and blue are hard to marry. Too strong, they fight each other. Monet wanted to prove all of us wrong. Those boats were probably not that red. Boating wasn't trendy enough. Everything in this painting is soft. The water, the sky, the far bank. Then that red hits you. That's Monet. You think soft, gentle. He replies with an aggressive red. You're impressed.
