A charming rural scene. Monet's house and family in the background, some geese making ripples in the foreground, a setting sun managing the color. Simple. Masterpiece. But that's only part of the story. Monet knew when he painted it that he was in for a serious fight. You don't paint geese in a garden in 1874 if you don't want derision. Unless you don't care. Monet didn't. And these geese were saying it loud.
