At the turn of the century, Picabia was a highly successful impressionist, seen as a talented successor to Monet or Sisley. About ten years later, people started calling him a copycat, painting recycled versions of the masters. He couldn't stand it. In 1909 he didn't just stop painting landscapes like this one, he switched to full abstract. The public rejected him completely. A few years later, they called him avant garde.
