Gauguin and Van Gogh did it before him, painting leaves in blue or red, grass in orange. But Matisse seriously turned up the game. Not only can you use whatever color you want, you don't even need precise shapes anymore, and background or foreground are a concept of the past. The result is exactly what Matisse intended. Pure joy on canvas.
