This is Ta Matete. 1892. Tahiti. Five women on a bench. Dressed in color. Composed. Almost formal. Gauguin called it "The Market." But nobody's selling fruit here. These women are waiting to be chosen. That's what this painting actually is. And Gauguin knew exactly what he was painting. The colors are bold. It's stunning to look at. That's kind of the problem with Gauguin. The art pulls you in before the context catches up.
