Fourteen people talking at once. Bottles half empty. Someone's flirting with the dog. Luncheon of the Boating Party is the painting where you can actually hear the noise. Renoir finished it in 1881 and said it was one of the hardest things he ever did. Every single person in it was a real friend. You're not looking at models. You're looking at his actual Saturday afternoon.
