Van Gogh couldn't paint a landscape he didn't see. It was one of the main disputes he had with Gauguin, who believed a painting could live only in someone's mind before ever touching the canvas. So Van Gogh painted nearly every landscape he could see from the asylum, or reach when he was allowed out. Until Starry Night. A landscape that didn't exist. Or maybe it did, in his mind.
