Water Lilies

By the time Monet painted his water lilies he was losing his eyesight. Cataracts. The world was getting blurry and he kept painting anyway. Maybe that's why these paintings feel the way they do. He wasn't painting what he saw. He was painting what he remembered seeing.

He spent the last thirty years of his life painting the same pond.

Over and over. More than 250 times. That's not obsession. That's a man who understood that the same thing is never the same thing twice.
