Entrance to the Public Gardens in Arles

Post-Impressionism

The story

This one is part of the Poet's Garden series, four paintings made for Gauguin, to make him feel welcome in the Yellow House. It's ironic to see how much effort Vincent put into getting the company of a maybe-not-so-nice guy. Theo had warned him. Pissarro could have too, as Gauguin had let him down as well. But Van Gogh had a project, the "Studio of the South," and a deep need for friendship. It will cost him an ear.
