The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles

Post-Impressionism

The story

Van Gogh suffered in ways we can't imagine. He never painted it. This is the courtyard of the hospital that treated him after the ear. You'd never guess he was a patient here. Munch painted The Scream to show his suffering. Others put their pain straight on the canvas. Van Gogh hid it. Arles, Saint Rémy, Auvers, he painted through all of it. No gaps in his output either. No weeks of silence. Whatever the day, whatever the feeling, he painted. And he painted beauty.
