The story

This is what Van Gogh saw from his window in Montmartre. 1886. He'd just arrived in Paris. No one knew his name. He was living with his brother Theo in a small apartment up the hill. And from up there, the whole city spread out in front of him. Every rooftop, every chimney, all the way to the horizon. This is not the Van Gogh you know yet. No sunflowers. No swirling skies. No yellow. This is him looking at a city that hasn't changed him yet. You can feel him holding back, almost like he's watching and waiting. Two years in Paris would blow his whole world open. The colors would come. The brushstrokes would get wild. Everything people love about Van Gogh started because of what this city did to him. But right here, in this painting, he's still the quiet Dutch guy on the hill. Just looking. Put this on your wall and you get the same view he had. Grey sky, rooftops going on forever, and that feeling of being new somewhere and not knowing what's about to happen to you.
