A flood is a special kind of disaster. It doesn't crash in. It creeps, inch by inch, taking a lot and leaving something strange behind: a street turned into a mirror. For an Impressionist, that's the jackpot. The whole landscape becomes a surface catching light and reflections. The Holy Grail of painting outdoors. Sisley spent most of his life living next to rivers. Sooner or later, they all rose. And every time, he was already there.
