Marie Laurencin didn't like what Cubism made of women: treated as objects to be broken into shapes. She was in the avant-garde with Picasso and Braque, but she invented the female side of it. Fluid forms and line. Soft pastel colors. And women painted like they were not there for you. These two dancers are locked in each other. They stare straight out at you like they don't care that you're watching. They don't. --- Taking up space
