In 1881, Gauguin was not yet a full time player. He still had the job he dreamed of dumping. He painted and exhibited with the impressionists, but the rebel was already there, even before he went all in. Mixing genres like this wasn't done. Break the rules when you can seems to be the idea behind this painting. You get a floral still life, a book on a table, and a countryside landscape, all in one frame.
