Before Rembrandt, militia portraits looked like yearbook photos. Stiff guys standing in rows. He painted them mid march, shadows flying, swords out, chaos everywhere. And they loved it. Paid him 1,600 guilders. That was a fortune. Hung it in their banquet hall for decades. Then time did its thing. 200 years of varnish and dirt turned the painting dark. So dark that people started calling it the Night Watch. It stuck. But it's not night. It never was. It's broad daylight.
