The story

Monet is 25 and he's got one goal: outdo Manet. Manet had just scandalized Paris with his Luncheon on the Grass, and Monet wanted even bigger. Literally. A canvas 15 feet tall by 20 feet wide. This forest clearing was the groundwork. The background, painted on site with real autumn light. Then it fell apart. He couldn't finish in time for the exhibition. The abandoned and unfinished giant ended up rotting in a security deposit.
