Houses at Vaugirard

Impressionism

The story

There's a Pissarro touch in this Gauguin, and that's perfectly normal. At the time, Gauguin was still an amateur under the master's umbrella. He still had a job, a family, money. The view is the rooftops of Vaugirard, the Paris neighborhood where he lived. Then everything went down, one thing after another. The stock exchange crashes: no more job. The household crashes: no more home. Soon his friendship with Pissarro will crash too. And the man left standing is a lonely genius, ready to sail to Tahiti.
