Orchard Bordered By Cypresses

Post-Impressionism

The story

Those cypresses are not just background, they're a wall. The Mistral is the first thing that hits you in Provence. Blue sky, incredible light, then this wind that doesn't stop for days. Van Gogh arrived in Arles in 1888 and had to stake his easel into the ground. When spring came the trees exploded and he painted them fast knowing the Mistral could rip every blossom off in an afternoon. Those cypresses are windbreakers. This painting is about something you can't see.
