This is one of the very few seascapes Pissarro ever painted. Even then, it is barely a seascape. More like a countryside landscape that happens to end at the edge of a cliff. Pissarro was never a sea guy. He liked hills, gardens, and street views. Things he could paint safely behind a window when his eye condition made standing in the cold coastal wind painful. He painted the ocean, but kept his feet firmly on dry land.
