Caillebotte made this painting thanks to the train. Without the railway embankment of the Paris to Normandy line, there was no way to get this slightly elevated view. That height is what gives the painting all its strength. Not sure standing up there was actually recommended, but they weren't exactly high speed trains back then. Call it a controlled risk.
